About Us

Farm-Fresh & Family-Run

Our History

Founded in 2016

The restaurant takes its name from a few historical tidbits and from the stunning scenery in which it's located.

In 1916, the Lake Toxaway dam broke and flooded the surrounding area. The story goes that the only casualty was an old blind mule. He quite literally never saw it coming.

The Toxaway Station part is important that the building is on the site of the former Toxaway Depot. The Depot was the last train stop on the route up from Asheville and Hendersonville when the area was primarily a logging area.

We also lived in England for awhile and truly felt this location looked exactly like a English pub in the countryside of Northern England. In that way, the building itself and the surrounding scenery spoke to us.

Meet the Chef

TBM AboutUs JamesCarol 2James Hargis, Proprietor & Chef

I started in the restaurant business at age 15. My father told me if I was going to do something the rest of my life, I better enjoy it. Well, cooking was it.

I put myself through culinary school and did my apprenticeship at a 1 and 2 Michelin Star Restaurant during the 80s. I returned to the states to land a job working for Chef Jean Banchet at Le Francais, the best restaurant in Chicago at the time.

I later moved to San Diego to work at several upscale resorts and restaurants. I became a chef for several Chaine des Rotisseurs groups, and worked as Executive Chef and Sous Chef at several Relais & Chateaux hotels. I've received feature coverage and mentions from Food Art, Southern Living, and others.

A Family Business

I met my wife Carole in a French Mediterranean restaurant in Greenville, SC. She has been a tremendous blessing to me and to the restaurant. Her touch can be seen on every detail of the dining room, where good food is paired with an even better atmosphere.

We have 3 boys. You'll sometimes meet James, Alex and Benjamin as you dine with us, or catch a glimpse of them as they help me in the kitchen. We are truly a family business.

I give God all the credit as He is the one who has enabled me to do the things I have achieved.
